School Reform Management and Professional Training Requirements for Heads of Secondary Schools

Secondary education produces a middle level workforce and provides a crop for higher education. Therefore, effective management is a pre-requisite for achieving desired objectives. The heads of secondary schools are promoted among teachers on the basis of seniority without any management experience. This study was designed to assess the management training requirements for heads of secondary schools. The sample of the study comprised 178 respondents (50% of the target population). The study concludes that a majority of the heads of secondary schools required training in major areas of general management, academic, human resource and financial management to handle the routine matters of their schools.

Dr. Syed Manzoor H. Shah is Ass. Professor in the EPPSL department, Faculty of Education, at Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad Pakistan. He carries 16 years of teaching and research experience. Dr. Shah possesses vast experience in educational planning, projectization, educational research, in-service teachers training programs and micro teaching skills etc. He received his Doctorate Degree in Education (Educational Planning and Management) from AIOU Islamabad, Pakistan. Dr. Syed Manzoor H Shah has been working as Coordinator with NORAD, IMTEC, UNICEF and UNESCO in their different projects. He has also developed different training modules for the tutors, senior tutors, teachers, and students of these projects. Formulation of PC-I is another area of his interest and has developed different PC-I for NORAD, UNICEF and the Government of Pakistan. He has authored several training manuals for the in-service training of the primary school teachers in Pakistan.

Khawaja Sabir Hussain has been serving as Deputy Director Research in the Academy of Educational Planning and Management Ministry of Education for the last 24 years. He did his Master’s in EPM, M. Phil and in EPM and presently he is completing his PhD in the same area. Khawaja Sabir Hussain has produced more than 30 national and international research studies in the different areas of education.
