WIPE (Wavelet Image Pornography Eliminator) was developed to offer real-time identification and filtering of pornographic images, to help ensure a friendly Web environment for those looking to avoid the strong presence of pornography on the Internet. A description and analysis of WIPE is discussed, staying away from technical jargon to aid in simplified understanding of WIPE. This analysis of WIPE identifies possible strengths and weaknesses, which are later tested. A test set of 100 images were identified using largely Google image search. These images were broken into 10 categories to aid in analysis. Some of these categories were possible weaknesses of WIPE as previously identified by Frischein et al. (1998a). All categories of images were tested using an online version of WIPE and results were recorded. The results are discussed with recommendations for the improvement of WIPE to ensure the possibility of WIPE as a real-time system for the identification of online pornographic images.
