This paper looks into the common issues emanating from the teaching and learning of Social Studies in Nigeria. It critically examines the philosophy behind the introduction of the subject, its expected outcome and what obtains at present. The school is meant to serve the purpose of the society, and Social Studies as a school subject is expected to play this role along side arrays of subjects that have been introduced into the school curriculum. The subject had witnessed a lot of transformation and it is still undergoing series of theoretical and pedagogical innovations. An overview of the performance of social studies vies the role it is expected to play and the situation at present.

I was born into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Napoleon Erhabor on 2nd March 1973. I obtained a secondary school leaving certificate in 1992, a National Certificate of Education in political Science and Religious Studies in 1998,a bachelors degree in Social Studies from the University of Ado-Ekiti in 2002 and currently a Masters degree studentof the University of Benin.All degrees were obtained in Nigeria. I am married with three kids with ages 8, 6, and 5 respectively.I have spent Ten years working in the Education Sector. I worked as a secondary school teacher for four years, an instructor in Tai Solarin college of Education during the same period and currently a graduate assistant lecturer in Tai Solarin university of Education Since 2005. I have attended several conferences and seminars I have both published and unpublished Journal articles and mimeographs to my credit. My hobbies are studying political issues, playing football and play music. I am capable of working under pressure with less supervision after instructions. I have no present or previous criminal cases.
